PERSONALITY:

"All right, first things first. I want $200,000 up front, another 200 when this is over. Oh, and B.O.W.s? Those are extra. An additional grand. Each."  /  "50 million dollars. Cash. Non-negotiable. That'll get you a pint."

Jake begins the game in self imposed isolation, willingly closed off from other people and refusing to allow anyone to get close to him. All he cared about was money and the power that it wielded, and how much he could get for fighting as a mercenary. This stemmed from the trauma of the loss of his mother, who he became a mercenary for to be able to pay for her medical bills. That he was unable to save her due to how expensive it was, and her sudden death, left Jake without anyone left to care for and without any other care in the world. Thus, his job as a mercenary and money were the only things he had any care for. At the beginning of the game he was working for insurgents fighting against the government - he didn't care for the politics behind it all, only the fact that they would pay him.

When Sherry asks him to help to save the world he doesn't care about the fact that it would mean saving people or becoming a hero, but instead how much money he could make from it and when he would be paid. At first, as he believes she's only asking him for help as a fighter, he asks for $200,000 before they began and the same amount at the end. However, when he found out that she wanted his (genetically mutated, inherited from his father) blood as an antibody against the C-Virus spreading throughout the world, he asks for $50,000,000 per pint instead. Without anyone to care for, money and fighting is all he has left.

When fighting against the Ustanak, he reminds Sherry of how much money she will owe him rather than the fact that their lives are in danger, or what they should do to escape. It isn't that he doesn't care about or enjoy the fight - it's more that money has been the foremost impact on his life and reasons for fighting and even his concerns towards Sherry and their lives can't break something that has been such a built in aspect of his life for so long. Money is power and Jake understands this.

"Yes, he’s a mercenary. But right now he’s under the protection of the U.S. government. He’s no threat to the BSAA."
"Unless someone pays me to be..."

Jake has a bit of a motor mouth, not withholding what he says against other people no matter what it may mean for him, going so far as to taunt enemies, even if they can't understand him (i.e the Ustanak). It doesn't matter to him if it can get him in trouble, even taunting BSAA agents and almost causing a fight between them to start. This is because of the fact that he doesn't think before he speaks, reacting impulsively with sarcasm and taunting without considering the possible consequences that may come afterwards. It is due to his being naturally sarcastic and usually never having had a reason to hold back what he says as he had no reason to care about what the people around him thought of him - especially since he spent most of his time around people who only hired him to fight and had no reason to care about what he did so long as he actually did what he was paid to do.

He has no respect for authority, perhaps stemming from the fact that he has never really been under the rule of any due to his long career of being a mercenary - one which started relatively young. The lack of respect carried on to others, not caring about what Piers Nivans (the BSAA agent) and the others with him thought or what they would do due to his mouthing off at them, saying that "all you jarheads look the same to me" and incensing the agent even further.

He has no respect for Chris Redfield in particular, who claims to know him. When Jake later learns that Chris was the one who killed his father, he asks, "were you just following orders, or was it personal?" It seems as though Jake cared for his father somewhere, despite his long term absence (perhaps due to his mother's feelings for Wesker), but after he receives a reply of 'both', it appears as if he's shot Chris in reply. However, as the scene pans out, it shows that he only shot the wall beside Chris, grazing his cheek and demands answers once the disaster is over. Jake is willing to fire against those that he disagrees with, even over the smallest things, but if they do not truly deserve it or if they have something that he wants, they would obviously be spared by him.

In the beginning, Jake even acts this way towards Sherry. While Sherry is introducing herself to him, he brushes her off halfway through and tells her that "now's not really the time". This continues throughout the game as they spend more time together trying to get to Sherry's superior, getting to know each other better and fighting together best they can. Throughout this time, as they begin to get closer to one another, Jake goes so far as to share his worries about becoming like his father with her, perhaps looking for comfort - or just acting out of agitation now that he finally has someone to talk to.

When it comes to Sherry, his sarcastic comments are still apparent but they are less biting than previously. His new-found care for her mostly shows through his actions, such as when it appeared an old friend of hers (Leon S. Kennedy) was going to get too close to her, his distrust for him and care for Sherry causes him to push himself between the two and push Leon out of the way. This extends to where he promises to run if they were surrounded by J'avo, but when they actually are, he tells her that he lied and stays to protect her, causing them both to be captured once more.

"I lowered my asking price... to 50 dollars."

By the end of the game, it is obvious that he has softened thanks to Sherry, supporting her in fighting against the Ustanak by placing his hand on the gun that finally killed it and, as they finally left the facility they fought it in, placing his hand over hers. In the final cut scene of the game, as Sherry returns back home on an aeroplane, Jake is seen watching her leave. A text is sent to her from him that says his asking price as dropped from the $50,000,000 he initially asked for to only $50 dollars instead. While Jake still remains rather closed off, he has become less hard-hearted thanks to Sherry and the effect she has had on him, and though he still continues his job as a mercenary, money has become less important to him - as he saves a young boy from a group of attacking Napad in exchange for the up-front price of an apple only.

This doesn't mean that Jake has somehow become nicer in nature simply because of Sherry, however. He is still brusque, sarcastic and quick to run into danger and get himself into trouble, but because of Sherry he has realised that there is, perhaps, more worth in the world than simply fighting for money - and his concern for her, and his feelings towards her, have helped to soften the rough edges around him that made him somewhat of a pain to be around at times.

"What do I do?" "Pull it out." "No, you'll bleed to death."

By chapter three of the game, Jake does seem to genuinely start to care for Sherry, though whether it's because it means the loss of his money or if he has genuinely began to like her is debatable. After she has some debris from a plane crash stuck in her back, Jake is at a loss of what to do and doesn't want to pull it out in case she dies. He's genuinely concerned about her health, and this is shown again after they are captured by Carla Radames (to be taken to China) when she gets knocked out by the Ustanak, and he's immediately distracted from the fight and desperately hopes that she'll get up and be alive (saying, "come on, supergirl..."). Though he had been mostly closed off from people, he can learn to open up to them and be concerned about them rather than just receiving money, something which he has put above his own health at times.

"Well, come on, supergirl. Let's get looking." / "What's the plan, hero?" / "You better put a leash on that puppy."
"More like an ex-girlfriend. [The Ustanak] doesn't know when to quit." / "He's like a sales rep that won't take no for an answer."

Jake has a habit of giving people nicknames, though ones that may be temporary and changing based on their opinion of him. After finding out Sherry has the ability to heal herself due to her father's experiments, he begins to fondly refer to her as 'supergirl', showing a development of their relationship but also reflecting Jake's tendency to use nicknames as a means of expressing the way he feels about people. For example, towards the BSAA, he is particularly derogatory, calling Piers Nivans a 'puppy' due to his constantly following Chris, or calling the BSAA agents as a whole 'jarheads'. He also, almost jokingly, refers to Leon Kennedy as 'hero', due to Leon's taking control of the mission and being the leader of the group during their temporary stint together.

Along with this, Jake has what can be considered a bad, or merely sarcastic, sense of humour. While being chased by the Ustanak, he makes several inappropriately timed comments about how it won't leave them alone, using metaphors to express this. Whenever he finds himself in a dangerous situation, he always has a sarcastic quip prepared, either to make himself feel better about it, or to make light of it to make it seem less dangerous. This sarcastic nature of his seems to soften and the jokes becomes less frequent, though only towards Sherry due to the fact that he becomes kinder to her. When they are around others in the game, he's as brusque (and even rude) as he always was.

"You really think that crazy doesn’t run in the family? That nothing of who my father was didn’t somehow get passed down on to me?"

There is no love lost between Jake and his father. For most of his life, Jake believed that his father was a deadbeat who abandoned him and his mother to their fates, and after finding out about Wesker from Carla Radames and his captors in China, he would have preferred it to be that way. Initially, Jake blames his father for all he has done in his life as a mercenary, worrying that he has inherited the "crazy" and other aspects of his father's sour personality. Though Sherry quickly disabuses him of this notion (as she would be in the same boat with her own father), it isn't until very much later in the game that Jake decides that it's time to show people that he can be different from his father.

Though Jake tells Chris Redfield (who killed Wesker) that he wants answers from him, it is not seen if he ever receives those answers as we only see him watching Sherry leave on an aeroplane. Jake does still hate his father, even more so after all that he learnt about him. He holds a large amount of bitterness towards the man, and still perhaps fears that he will end up like Wesker, or die like him (insane, alone and hated) despite all he had done with Sherry. Though, it is thanks to learning about Wesker that Jake decides he wants to absolve himself of the regrets he carries and to do something good, and thus puts his all into saving the world.

COURT ALLIANCE & REASONING: Unseelie. Jake is extremely impulsive, never stopping to think things through before he does them. He has never been one for honour or kindness, considering his life as a mercenary and as such a killer, and has cared about little but where his next pay check is going to come from. He hates being chained down and prefers to be free to explore wherever he likes, unless it means losing said pay. Authority has been something he constantly rebels against, along with the idea of being a "good guy", refusing to be tied down by either someone who considers themselves higher than him or by any kind of morals or honour.

ABILITIES:

  • HAND-TO-HAND.  Growing up as a mercenary meant that Jake was trained to be proficient in hand-to-hand combat. This is one of his areas of expertise. He is able to put combinations of attacks together to be able to swiftly beat the enemy, and his attacks are good enough that they were able to stagger the Ustanak, something that had only happened with powerful weapons or large explosions before. His upward palm attacks and piercing downward kicks are almost identical to the ones that his father used to use, and he often incorporates flashy jump kicks and wrestling throws into his moves.
  • STAMINA. Jake inherited an impressively increased stamina from his father due to his genetic manipulations, being so much that he is able to pull off various combinations of hand-to-hand attacks without losing any of his stamina, or his breath.
  • GUNS. Guns were another essential during his time as a mercenary, and he has been trained to use various types of them during his time fighting. This means that he is able to handle anything from a handgun to a shotgun or a magnum with little trouble with very precise aim.
  • BLOOD. His blood made it so that he was immune to the virus that caused people to turn into zombies. It could also be used in a "cure" for other people, which is why Sherry originally approached him looking to get some off of him. What this cure does, exactly, is unstated.
  • OTHER. Jake learns languages very quickly. After only two months being captured in a Chinese facility, he managed to pick up Cantonese from his captors. After six months, he was able to read and speak the language fluently. He also knows how to play the piano, performing Chopin's Revolutionary Etude during his and Sherry's escape from the facility.
